Should Man Play God

August 2, 2009

Should humans try to play god? What I mean by that question is should humans try to fiddle with ‘the-way-things-are-and-have-always-been’? Depending on who the humans in question are and what they plan to do, my answer could be a yes… or a no.

Creation and Destruction are two actions considered reserved for God and God alone. However, humans have been ‘destroying’ right through the centuries. With wars over territories and religion, and indiscriminate killing of human beings during the slave trade and the world wars human beings played the role of God. And although we detest it, we still continue. So if people say that humans shouldn’t try to play god, I would agree. It would mean that wars be stopped. That warring factions in third world countries stopped fighting over who would rule who. It would mean that we learnt to use renewable sources of energy. It would mean that each human being treated another as an equal. It would mean that we stopped manufacturing arms and nuclear weapons. Also, it would mean that we, some how, learn to take into account only the positive side of every new discovery. To use every weapon for good.

Creation and Destruction are two sides of a coin. And when ‘god’ created the world, he set the coin on its edge, in perfect balance. When some tipped the coin to one side with the destruction we took into our own hands, there were people who attempted (unintentionally) to balance it.

We discovered cures for diseases. We increased the lifespan of homo sapiens. We created habitats for ourselves in which we could survive without having to fight.

We tried to rid the world of suffering. We attempted to give people a choice about whether they wanted to live or die (euthanasia). We tried to created more of our own (cloning) and also stop ourselves from creating more of our own (abortion). In other words, we tried to play the role of God

Now, I understand people who condemn scientists for trying to play god, on the basis of logic and ethics. But when people bring religion into the argument (‘god will punish you!’ or ‘it is against what is written in the holy scriptures!’) I’m lost.

Should humans play god? There doesn’t seem to be any way of stoping them. God is kind and merciful. As are humans. God created humans in his own likeness. So what stops them from copying him.

And don’t we all pick up both the good and the bad from our parents?
