To call it objectification of women would be putting it lightly!

Recently Afghan enacted a legislation that allows men of the Shia sect of Islam to deny their wives food and clothing if they refuse to comply with their ‘resonable’ sexual demands. What’s shocking is not that it contradicts many of the treaties Afghanistan has signed with International bodies, but the fact that it makes life in newly free Afghanistan little better than when it was under Taliban oppression. This new legislation goes against the right of a woman to choose. The worst is that women need permission from their husbands or other male members of their family to work. So they can’t sustain themselves either.

This legislation is supposed to be an amended version of an act that was passed earlier in March 2009. That one stated that a woman has to have sex with her husband at least 4 days a week and rape within marriage was indirectly condoned. This law has been passed by President Karzai who is considered a moderate, just a few days ahead of the Presidential Elections and doesn’t seem to be just a coincidence. Nearly 20% of Afghans are Shiites It also seems that the female parliamentarians weren’t asked for their inputs before this legislation was passed.

The Parliament has the right to go over and amend the act once they reconvene, but until then, it stays in effect. Can a parallel be drawn with what women did to their husbands in Africa?

It almost makes you realise how much better Indian politicians are when compared to their Afghan counterparts.
