To a Friend

February 24, 2010

A friend of mine is studying abroad. And he’s studying dance. It isn’t generally considered a ‘stable’, ‘responsible’, ‘money-making’ career choice for boys, at least not in India.

But honestly, isn’t it time we stopped thinking this way? Today, both men and women work. And it’s practical to do what interests you, or 20 years from now you might end up bored and dissatisfied.

We have just one life. And it doesn’t seem worth it to spend this one life ‘being responsible’ or ‘being a good son/ daughter’ to parents or society by doing something that makes us unhappy.

And WHY is dance an okay career option for a girl and not for a boy? I think there’s a little thinking needed here too.

So here’s something i wrote, and it’s for him.

You’re living alone for the first time in your life… and there are bound to be times when you’re doubtful or confused.

But this is one thing you shouldn’t be doubtful about. You’ve been crazy about dance since GOD KNOWS when!

You’re doing something you love. If it makes you happy and if it completes your life then you SHOULD keep doing what you’re doing!

Have you taken a look at the people around you? They go mad doing a thousand things that they think are ‘not a waste of time’ and actually they make some of the most unhappy people in the world.

Remember? I must have told you some time… ‘When you’re doing the thing you love, there is nothing that can stop you from succeeding’ and ‘when you love your work, you never work a day!’ (-my mum).

You are so lucky that you have a clear idea about what you love to do!

You’ve seen 3 idiots nah? You know that song “give me some sunshine…”? There’s that line, “H2SO4 mein bacchpan jalaa dala“.

You don’t want to be like that!

Remember, whatever you do, you do for yourself.

And i could never get bugged about you missing home! Ever! Remember my haalat in delhi? So yea, i totally understand.

And having your aunt around you and friends near you should make you feel better too :).

Now cheer up, get up, and DANCE!
And i want to see you smile. You’re my mr. positive!! :P
Ok? (Like you say) 1, 2, 3,…………. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

This was the first post I had read of her some months back. And it was for me. I felt so good reading this and it got all my positive energy back on the doubts I had on my carrier which made her write this. Its brilliantly written. And I loved her for every characteristic of hers. Miss her. Forever in my heart.
